Key Stage 4:  BTEC Level 2 First Award in Sport (Pearson) 600/4779/3

This qualification is a two year course equivalent to 1 GCSE at grades A*- C. The course provides work-related vocational training, which guides students through practical and written work to explore a wide variety of approaches to a career pathway in sport, building a range of skills and understanding in the sport sector. 

This course is 75% coursework and 25% computer based theory examination on fitness. The course will be continuously assessed by completing individual assignment. The course is based around personalised learning which allows students to progress at a pace relative to their own needs. 

Course Components:

The course consists of 4 units in total, consisting of both mandatory and optional units.   

Fitness for Sport and Exercise (On-line examination) (25% of total BTEC) Core Unit

This component focuses on the fitness elements of sport. Students will study the components of fitness and the principles of training. They will also research the different training methods, as well as becoming familiar with a range of fitness tests to determine fitness levels

This component is externally assessed using a 1 hour on-screen examination. Edexcel sets and marks the assessment.

Practical sports performance (NEA) (25 % of total BTEC) Core Unit

This component focuses on practical performance in two selected sports. Students will be required to demonstrate a range and skills, techniques and tactics in the selected sports. In addition, they will develop an understanding of the rule, regulations and scoring system for each selected sport. Students will also be required to review, analysis and evaluate sporting performance in their selected sports.

This component is a non-exam assessment (NEA) assessed internally by the centre and externally verified by Pearson.

Additional Optional Units x 2 (NEA) (50% of total BTEC)

This component is a non-exam assessment (NEA) assessed internally by the centre and externally verified by Edexcel. Students will study two further optional units chosen from the following: The Mind and Sports Performance, the Sports Performer in Action or Training for Personal Fitness and Leading Sports Activities.

The PE Department offer a rich and varied programme of extra-curricular clubs for students wishing to stretch and develop their abilities. In addition, at KS4, catch up and support is available on a one to one basis / small groups where necessary. Some of the activities on offer include:
